For families and schools
Medication at nursery and school: how to give it safely and keep a record
Medication is where a small mistake matters most. A simple, written routine protects the child, the staff and the school.
Before any medication is given
- Written permission from the parent, with the medication’s name, dose, times and how long to give it
- The medication in its original packaging, labelled with the child’s name
- Known allergies checked and recorded
At each dose
- Check the child, the medication, the dose and the time against the plan
- Record straight away: what was given, how much, when and by whom
- Tell the family, especially if the child refused it
If a dose is missed
It happens: a busy morning, a child who was asleep. What matters is that someone notices quickly and the family hears. A record that shows each planned dose makes a missed one easy to spot.
Making it easy
In toddlepath, families send the medication plan from their phone, the school approves it, each dose is recorded in a few taps, and families can see that it was given. If a planned dose is not recorded in time, the school and the family are told.
